According to data from CoinGecko, Ethereum’s nine-year reign as the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation has now come to an end. Since the ICO boom in the second half of 2017, when Ethereum officially overtook XRP to secure the second spot globally, it had never been overtaken by any other cryptocurrency; Ethereum had held the position of ‘number two’ in the crypto market for a full nine years. On 6 June 2026, ETH fell to a low of 1,505.68, with a market capitalisation of US$182.1 billion; USDT, with a market capitalisation of US$187 billion, surpassed ETH to become the second-largest cryptocurrency.
